How Do Explora Journeys Cruise Upgrades Work

Booking an Explora Journeys cruise does not always mean your suite category is final. After a confirmed booking, travelers may have the chance to move into a higher suite category through Explora’s upgrade bidding process.

That is the key point: yes, Explora Journeys does offer upgrade opportunities, but they are not automatic and they are not guaranteed. The process is invitation-based, availability-driven, and handled through a bid rather than a fixed upgrade request.

Explora Journeys upgrades are handled through bidding

Explora Journeys uses a bidding system for many suite upgrade opportunities. Once a traveler has booked a cruise, they may receive an email from Explora Journeys before sailing with an invitation to bid on an upgrade.

This email usually arrives 30 to 120 days before embarkation, though timing can vary by sailing. If upgrade bidding is available for that booking, the email will explain which higher suite categories may be open and how to submit a bid.

The process is simple in concept:

  • A traveler has a confirmed Explora Journeys booking.

  • Explora sends an upgrade invitation by email before sailing.

  • The traveler chooses an eligible higher suite category.

  • The traveler submits a bid based on what they are willing to pay.

  • Explora reviews bids closer to sailing.

  • If accepted, the traveler is moved into the upgraded suite category.

The important detail is that this is not the same as calling and asking for a free upgrade. It is a paid bidding opportunity, and the cruise line decides which bids are accepted based on availability and other factors.

The upgrade email is the starting point

The upgrade process usually begins when Explora Journeys sends an email to eligible guests. That email is the main gateway to bidding.

Travelers can follow the instructions in the email to review the available upgrade categories and place a bid. The email should guide the traveler through the available options, bid amounts, and any terms connected with the offer.

If the traveler booked through an Explora Travel Advisor, they can also contact that advisor for help. A travel advisor can explain the options, help compare suite categories, and assist with the bidding process.

That can be especially useful if several upgrade categories are offered. A traveler may want help deciding whether to bid on the next category up or aim higher.

A bid does not guarantee an upgrade

The most common misunderstanding about cruise upgrade bidding is assuming that placing a bid locks in the upgrade. It does not.

A bid is an offer. Explora Journeys may accept it, or they may not. Bidding does not guarantee an upgrade, even if the traveler places a strong bid.

In general, the highest bidders are more likely to be selected. That makes sense, since Explora is reviewing offers for limited available inventory. Still, a high bid does not create a promise. If no suites are available in the requested category, or if other bids are selected, the original booking remains in place.

Travelers should think of the bid as a chance to improve the trip, not as something to build the entire vacation around.

A practical way to look at it is this: bid an amount that feels worthwhile if accepted, but not so high that the upgrade stops feeling like a good value.

You cannot choose a specific suite number

Another key point is that an accepted upgrade is for a suite category, not a specific suite number.

For example, if a traveler bids to move into a higher suite type and the bid is accepted, Explora Journeys will assign a suite within that upgraded category based on availability. The traveler cannot guarantee a particular suite location, deck, or number through the bidding process.

That means there may be no way to select:

  • A specific suite number

  • A particular side of the ship

  • A preferred deck

  • A suite near or away from elevators

  • A certain position forward, midship, or aft

Once Explora assigns the upgraded suite, the assignment is based on what is available. Suite assignments cannot be modified as part of the upgrade bidding process.

For some travelers, that is perfectly fine. The priority is getting into a higher category. For others, suite location matters just as much as suite type. In that case, keeping the original hand-picked suite may be the better choice.

How to decide what to bid

There is no single perfect bid amount because every sailing is different. Availability, demand, suite category, and the number of other bidders can all affect the outcome.

A thoughtful bid starts with a simple question: what would the upgrade be worth to this trip?

A longer sailing may make extra space feel more valuable. A special occasion may make the higher category more appealing. A port-heavy itinerary, where little time is spent in the suite, may make a lower bid feel more reasonable.

Before bidding, compare the potential upgrade with the existing booking:

  • Is the current suite already well located?

  • Would the higher category add meaningful space or amenities?

  • Is the bid amount comfortable?

  • Would the trip still feel complete if the bid is declined?

  • Is suite location less important than suite category?

This is where an Explora Travel Advisor can be helpful. They can walk through the trade-offs and help decide whether bidding makes sense. They can also help avoid overbidding for an upgrade that may not matter much to the traveler’s actual experience.

What happens if the bid is accepted

If Explora Journeys accepts the bid, the traveler is upgraded into the new suite category and charged according to the bid terms. The traveler should then review the updated reservation details carefully.

The new suite assignment will reflect what Explora has available in that category. Since specific suite numbers cannot be guaranteed, the traveler should be prepared to accept the assigned suite if the upgrade clears.

If the bid is not accepted, the traveler keeps the original booked suite. In that case, nothing changes with the original accommodations.

This is one of the reasons the bidding process can be appealing. A traveler can keep a confirmed suite while still taking a chance on something higher.

The best mindset for Explora upgrade bidding

The smoothest way to approach Explora Journeys cruise upgrades is to treat them as a welcome possibility, not a certainty.

Book a suite that would make the trip enjoyable from the start. Then, if an upgrade invitation arrives, review the available categories and place a bid only if the added cost feels right. If the bid is accepted, it becomes a pleasant enhancement. If it is declined, the original suite is still ready for the journey.

The main rules are straightforward: Explora may invite booked travelers to bid, the email usually arrives 30 to 120 days before sailing, a Travel Advisor can help, the highest bids are more likely to succeed, and neither acceptance nor a specific suite number is guaranteed.

That makes the process flexible, but not fully predictable. For travelers who are comfortable with that, bidding can be a smart way to pursue a more elevated suite experience before stepping on board.
